After a one year absence the KLU Open Dagen were on the programme again. This edition was held at Volkel and was themed '100 years of military aviation in the Netherlands'. The Open Days were held on June 14 and 15. I went on Saturday the 15th. The weather wasn't that great but we had some sunshine. The flying progamme started at 10.00 o'clock so my objective was to photograph the Static Display as early as possible so that we were ready for the Flying Programme. That didn't work that great because we arrived too late on the base.

The Static included two very nice Greek A-7 Corsairs, a Romanian C-27, an An-2 and L-39 from Estonia and a Finnish PC-12 as the highlights. Also a very nicely restored Dutch F-104G was put on display. On the Friday there were allready 70,000 spectators but this Saturday surpassed that with over 150,000 spectators !! In all a dazzling 220,000 spectators. In the morning the Flying Programme allready included some very nice aircraft like the only flying Saab Viggen in the world ! This former 37098 (now civilian registered as SE-DXN) put on an incredible show. Just brilliant. Furthermore two Polish SU-22 Fitters represented the cold war era and also the Red Arrows were performing in the morning. They had to leave for the UK in the afternoon due to the Queen's Birthday. Also the Czech Mi-24 did a display as well as off course the Dutch Apache together with the Dutch F-16 (Orange Lion).

As always the KLU did an Air Power demo in which ten F-16's, four Apaches, two Chinooks, a Hercules and a KDC-10 took part. In the Afternoon an incredible and beautiful sight took shape with a formation of ten F16's with a KLM Boeing 737-800. The 737 carried 50 seriously ill children. This was organised by the KLM and the High Flyer Society (Stichting Hoogvliegers). I am sure these children had the time of their lives. This is a great initiative. In the Afternoon there were three more demoteams: the Frecce Tricolore, the Patrouille de France and the Patrouille de Suisse. More fighternoise came from the Finnish Hornet, the Czech Saab Gripen and a very nice demo from two French Mirage 2000's from Isteres-Le Tube called the Ramex Delta Display Team.

The next edition off the Luchtmachtdagen will be held on the 20th and 21st of June 2014 at Gilze-Rijen.

p.s. the incredible pic below of the Frecce Tricolore was made by my son Niek !
